Arrest in Smithfield murder case

  • 4 April 201429 December 2018
  • by Carmel Rickard

Police have arrested a man in connection with the killing last weekend of respected Smithfield community leader, Ounooi Badenhorst, 77.

She was shot in her home where she lived alone after the death of her husband Jurie last year.

Police said they had acted on a tip-off and were waiting for the suspect – a ‘local’ man – when he came home. They said they had found a gun and goods allegedly stolen from the Badenhorst home.

While the suspect remains in custody, family members have been arriving in Smithfield after long flights from Europe. They have not yet announced any decision about when the funeral will be held.
